The Model

The Process: Going from the two-dimensional painting to a three-dimensional modelwas not an easy task. I began by analizing the picture for several hours, or should I say staring at the picture blankly trying to figure out where I wanted to go with it. I decided I needed some inspiration. I began by doing some research on Mondrian. I wanted to understand his process in making the picture.

I read Mondrian's article, "Plastic Art and Pure Plastic Art," from Art in Theory and read about him in the book, The History of Modern Art. I discovered that after moving to New York in 1940, Mondrian became inspired by the city and America's Jazz Music. Upon learning this information , I decided that I too would look to these sources for inspiration. New York City was a little out of my reach, however, so I was left with the Jazz music for inspiration. I turned to Thelonous Monk - Straight, No Chaser and Peterson/ Pass/ Pederson - The Trio.

From there I began looking at the painting in several different ways. I saw a certain structure to it. At the base of the painting were the horizontal and vertical yellow lines. To me these lines represented a sort of grid of New York City and Jazz music. On top of that were the various squares of red, blue and grey. They have different depths and dimensions, yet they flow on the yellow lines forming a certian rhythm. The squares seem to be pulsating off the page.

From these ideas I began to create my model. I wanted to start with a base structure representing the yellow lines. I began to view these as planes. The vertical lines seemed to alternate on the horizontal line so I decided to make the horizontal lines one continous plane on several levels with the vertical lines coming out of these planes but not ever fully connecting. To show the rhythm of the piece I put little squares on the top and bottom of the horizontal planes. Next, I wanted to show the depth and dimensions and pulsations of the piece. I decided to make of various size and textual come out of the planes representing the pulsations.
