Conceptual map for “a few minutes of identity, affinity, layers, cry, temporality”
2. Identity as layers that are not simply mirrors of each other (the same, but different sizes) but rather distinct. Selves contain parts that don’t look like outside part. The inside can come out and look surprisingly different. The inside of an onion can be phallic, contrasting the round exterior.
3. linear time does not necessarily tell the truest story...layers are revealed not as a chronology, but in conjunction.
3. we, humans, continue to believe in linear time, in spite of evidence to the contrary. Telling the story linearly, we compel each other to cry.
4.on cry: emotions are seemingly the ‘natural’ response to linear stories (thus, the success of sensationalism. Sometimes it is ok to distrust our emotions. (Also, it is good to trust them.)
4. on cry: we lose as well as gain as our persons shift. happiness is not the only rational for choosing how to live. it is not the only way to gage success.
1. Donna Haraway proposes that affinity, not identity, be the formulation with which to relate. If the onion and blue paint do not share obvious identity signifiers, are they still able to relate, given their proximity? Are they attracted to each other?
The fourth dimension is time/smell...onions have a strong smell. As you watch the video, perhaps you want to enter the fourth dimension with us. Cut an onion, take a whiff.
