Project - 3
So for this project, which is untitled, I chose to focus on a more light hearted side of the uncanny instead of a dark or creepy path. The main uncanny element of the project is the fact that the main character, Alexander, receives a coin/token that can grant him any wish. My character then ultimately uses the powers of the coin to get rid of a grumpy old man that constantly threatens to get me evicted. This project was shot in a very simple manner because I wanted to focus more on the SFX which are the highlights of the short. So I'm going to skip telling you all about how I shot it and focus on all of the post-production work. The first thing I did after shooting this masterpiece was I chopped the footage together into what you see in the movie. After this I spent probably about 2 full days editing the post-production sound and adding in all those tiny sound details that we all take for granted, for example: clothes rustling, writing on the pad, foot steps, etc. Once I had picture and sound lock I began the digital effects. The first effect I did was the magic twirl that spins around the coin before it grants me my wishes. This was a fairly easy effect to create because the image itself was just stock (I would tell you where I got it from but I've actually had it for years and have lost track of where it came from). However, to complete this effect I had to create an expression that would produce the lighting flickers on my face and the pad. This was done with the expression wiggle(10,10) in the effects program called After Effects. With this out of the way, I moved onto the laser which I had been experimenting with for about a month; I felt it had to look just right. The laser was made with a particle emmiter and fractal distortion in After Effects and was then rotated to fit the composition of the shot. Moving on to the spaceship, I want you all to know that I this was very difficult and tedious to make and I could have not of achieved this without the help of my father, Bill Shumake. The spaceship was made in a 3D program, 3D Animation Master, and was very exciting to use because I had never made a spaceship before. My dad showed/taught me how to make it and got me started. Once I took the chair I slowly created the spacehship and made it into what you see in the video above! Now I can't get into the specifics of how I did all of these SFX because it would take me an eternity to write every step for you all, but I can recommend that you look up a company called CREATIVE COW. This company gives out free After Effects tutorials and has taught me almost everything I've learned when it comes to After Effects. Well this is all for now and I hope you enjoyed the project. I would also like to make one more special thanks to Sandy and Joey for having this class which allowed me to practice learning new effects in a safe and fun learning environment. |
