I have been writing music for almost four years now. It is my greatest passion in this world. After finding out we could do ANYTHING in this class, I decided I wanted to do at least one musical piece. I originally wanted to do something I could perform, but in the end I didn’t want any vocals in this piece, and I didn’t want to just sit on stage and play guitar or piano. It seemed like it wouldn’t be doing the song justice, so I decided to record it.

I’ve only played a little bit of piano here and there for the last couple years, so I am by no means good. This song is the first thing I ever wrote on a piano. Thanks to my girlfriend, I was able to borrow a keyboard to record it. I recorded the guitar parts through my Fender amp with my Gibson SG. I didn’t have my bass on me at the time so the original recording was lacking a bottom end. I recorded everything on my Yamaha AW16G digital workstation and then transferred the files over to computer for mixing.

Once I got everything onto a computer, I realized I had a big problem. I had no drums. Realizing this, I quickly downloaded a trial version of a program called “Fruityloops”. In high school, I used this program to make techno songs and rap beats. I figured sampling drums to a rock song wouldn’t be too hard, and it really wasn’t. I’m not completely satisfied with the drums in the song, but I’m not a drummer, so really it was the best I could do. I ended up mixing the song in Adobe Premiere. It sounded like crap. Really. I was embarrassed to present it to the class, but I had to. Strangely enough, everyone seemed to enjoy it. I even heard a yell from Sandy at the end of the song, which made me happy.

Someone asked me what I used to mix the song and I told them Adobe Premiere because I couldn’t afford any good mixing software. Sandy was awesome enough to help me out and gave me an alternative to premiere. I went back and recorded the bass and remixed the song. I’m much happier with how it sounds now.

The idea behind this song is that I wanted to create a piece of music for a different purpose than music is usually created. Usually, people write music to listen to, to dance to, to rock out to, etc….basically, to enjoy. I wanted to write music for the exact opposite reason. I wanted to write music you could turn up to ten, hit play, and suffer to. I wanted to write music you could die to.
