Failed Identity
Ever since I watched that episode of Goosebumps about the girl's face becoming fused to the mask and her turning into a monster, I have always been weary of masks and their power to eliminate your identity. For my first project I decided to make my own masks and take portraits of people wearing them.
I used a lot of different materials: feathers, glittery mesh material, mirrors, crystals, glitter, paint and basswood. I made a total of five masks, but I only used four of them. I wanted to keep their colors cohesive, so I didn't use the red mask I made. Also, it was the last mask I made and I kind of did it without any consideration or planning so I didn't want to showcase it.
After I made the masks, I set up a backdrop for the portraits. I bought this really awesome fabric with a print that looks very tribal and primitive, which I though would compliment the purpose of the masks as well as their colors.
I took the pictures with a Canon SLR camera and experimented with the aperture in order to get a "blurred face" effect when I made the models move their heads side to side.
Once I took the photographs, I used Final Cut Pro to animate them. Once I was satisfied with my cut, I then imported the movie into Soundtrack Pro and created a sound design. I used samples of clinking bells and a lot of different ambient noise. I manipulated the sounds by shifting their pitches and adding flangers and bit crusher effects in order to suit the cuts of the movie as well as the texture of the masks.
