Project 2: Culture Foods

This project came to me while I was at a sushi restaurant. I ordered some shrimp and along with it came the head of the shrimp on the dish, fried. I have never eaten a fried shrimp head and in the beginning, was a little reluctant to try it. This made me realize the impact that food has on a culture. Each culture has some sort of distinct type of food that others may view strange or even uneatable. This view is shared by all cultures on something that is not common to them. This is why this falls under weird science. Culture is a huge part of social science and the different foods that distinguish them are definitely a weird part of it. One, because who would of thought food could be such a great impact on what represents a culture, and two, because to others it is definitely weird to understand that one could eat such a food.

For my presentation, I brought in a slide show to present some of the foods of different cultures. Many viewed them strangely and some were surprised that these types of food were actually eatable. I also brought in some food items that were not common to our culture so we could experience different foods that many have not tried before. The response was very diverse and interesting. Some thought a few of the foods were eatable while many showed the expected negativity to something that was definitely different to what they were used to. Overall, this presentation was a great learning experience, I believe to me as well as the class in learning something that we've always looked over so lightly and never really thought about.

The different types of foods that were brought in from top to bottom is, dried and seasoned crab, dried squid, seaweed biscuits, preserved duck egg (thousand year old egg), and fried and cured pork ears.
