Description:
This project was another one that I had been kicking
around in my head for a while, and I was lucky enough to be able to
morph it to fit the criteria for this class. My idea was to basically
start with one sound, one tone, and manipulate that sound into as many
different textures as I could. Then, I would layer all of those
textures into one track and try to create something musical with it. As
I stated in class, I think the end result was that I had more fun
making this track than anything else, but I feel that it served well as
a learning tool for me. I basically locked myself in my room for a few
hours and ran my initial sound through every single piece of
sound-manipulating gear I have. Pedals, processors, and plug-ins...they
were all fair game. The hardest part was layering them all together and
finding a mix where there wasn't too much going on at one point. I
wanted the piece to be relatively open and ambient, so I slowed
everything down a bit and made sure to not have more than one or two
tracks playing simultaneously. The piece was mixed so that every track
was heard at least once above everything else going on, and my goal was
to create some sort of linear progression through the music. I'm not
sure if I achieved this goal, but it was fun to do none the less.
This piece was recorded using a MicroKorg and a
veritable hodgepodge of effects. Everything was recorded in Logic and
sequenced in Audacity. Additionally, the track was slowed down in
Audaciy before being bounced to MP3.
