Description:
This was by far the most challenging project I did
all year. To begin with, I am not particularly skilled when it comes to
the visual. I have spent years developing my ears, but I have never had
much prowess in the visual arts. I do like smashing things, however, so
this project allowed me to explore a medium I wanted to become more
comfortable with. The idea for this was spawned out of my own habits as
of late. For the past couple months, I have been watching more and more
TV as well as reading less and less. It's not that I have anything
against TV in general, but I do feel that it promotes feelings of
laziness and complacency within your life that I strive to break away
from.I chose to make it a pinata because a pinata is almost the polar
opposite of a TV set in terms of the level of technology, enjoyment
factor, and usefulness. Much the same way that beating on a piece of
technology can be a cathartic experience, the participant now gets
candy as well...it's a win-win situation. I had this vision of
some guy in a suit getting fed up with his TV and
then smashing it to pieces in a fit of anger, so I wanted to do
something that was a visual representation of that feeling. I was also
thinking about children and how the current generation is being raised
with TV as the standard of enjoyment. Kids are brought up by TV shows
and this bothers me greatly. It makes me think that all of these
children are going to grow up embodying the very words I wrote on this
piece. The words written on the TV are:
- mediocrity
- apathy
- boredom
- complacency
- dullness
- indifference
- lost
- stupidity
- mindless
- aimless
- lethargy
- disinterest
- neglect
- monotony
- envy
These are all words that I feel represent many of
the emotions and actions that are perpetuated by watching too much TV.
Again, I am not trying to say that all TV is bad, but I do think that
the majority of Americans need to cut back on their consumption. The TV
used for this project was an old one that I had been keeping
around my house just in case something like this came up, and I'm very
glad I kept it. These pictures show the finished project, as I did not
have a camera to document the making of this piece. The final picture
is one of the chain that was supposed to be holding up the pinata, but
it decided to break off at the last minute. Still, it was more than fun
to bash this thing with a hammer.
