Spontaneous Human Combustion
I've been fascinated by SHC ever since I saw a
documentary about it on PBS. It's cool how it relates to
Postmodern Gothic, too. Nowhere else could I justify making it the
subject of an assignment.
Most of the victims of SHC are overweight, alcoholic smokers. For
this reason, people usually say they
burned up after dropping ashes on their bedclothes or not fully
extinguishing a cigarette, then passing out. However,
the forensic evidence suggests otherwise. Bodies usually burn from the
inside, with an intense heat that melts their bones
yet leaves nearby papers unharmed.
This seems to me like a physical manifestation of the monsters we have
inside. Overweight people, or people with
addictions especially may feel like they have something to hide (or
something the wish they could hide.) How would
other monsters manifest themselves physically? Could one drown from the
inside? It would be a great sci-fi topic to
explore, in the least.
No one has ever witnessed SHC, and naturally, there's lots of
controversy over whether it's real. There isn't a lot of
information out there, but I highly recommend a book called "Ablaze" if
you want to read about it.
I had a lot of fun putting together these pictures and music. I think
Joe Satriani was perfect for the background, and
I couldn't resist a little "Under My Skin" by Frank Sinatra to make it
a little creepy. Taking him out of context was great.
