The first project of the semester threw itself into my brain once I realized that my original idea would fly better for a second or final project. Once my mind was made up to reorganize my calendar, my head went swimming to the forms of technology I use most. What forms of technology did I use most? I started thinking about technologies that are used for purposes other than what they were originally intended. My head went straight to music creation and how significant an impact technology has had on all different types of music and the way it is recorded and created. Sure, I understood that with each new instrument introduced into the world that is also a form of technology, however I stood back and looked at what I myself used in music creation. I tend to start my music creation with 'traditional' means - such as acoustic guitars, pianos, etc. What I wanted to do instead was utilize the technology portion of music creation, the technology that is not usually assumed to be an instrument in its own right (pre-amps, stomp boxes, amps, 1/4" cables) and use them to create an original piece of work that could be called music in its own right. What originally started as a strict refusal to use anything other than the aforementioned tools quickly turned into me trying to convince myself I could justify MIDI as being a technology. I did not convince myself that my use of MIDI is legit for my original intention of this project, but I found it very interesting that once I started creating music with the other tools, the melody started itself in my head - and the song took on a life of its own. |
