Project #1 -
How to Change a Light Bulb
Changing a light bulb is usually easy to do. But when
it is in the ceiling of a church sanctuary and 58 feet
above the chancel floor, changing a light bulb
becomes an adventure in a blackbox, the catacombs
of a church attic.

My first project documents changing 3 light bulbs,
working my way through the attic, and sharing the
view from above the chancel floor.

The building was completed in 1969, and, so far as I
know, except for one former building manager, I am
the only person to have changed the light bulbs in
the sanctuary attic. I suppose this bit of information
discloses that I am rather ancient compared to the
typical Actlab Blackbox student.

In the spirit of a black box, the typical church member
has no clue about the contents of the church attic and
is only interested in the lights working.

I used a Sony 7.2 megapixel digital camera in the
movie mode with a Sima (9-LED) video light source.
I also had a single LED flashlight (and a cell phone).
Press the play button to watch the 15 minute video.
For this project, my new digital camera was the
black box. I had taken a number of still photos in
normal lighting conditions, but had never used the
movie mode, muchless in near darkness. The lack
of work lights in the church attic and my poor (but
light in weight and small in size) light source gave
this video a
Blair Witch Project feel to it; similar
feelings, even though unintentional!
