Project #1 -
Ambisonic Microphone - Exp2

When I built the first version of my ambisonic microphone in the Spring of 2008 (Soundscapes), I had no clue where that project would lead. Now I am building a revised version which fixes some of the issues that surfaced with the first: a smaller preamplifier enclosure greatly enabled by a printed circuit board for each of the 4 preamplifiers, an easy and repeatable way to change gain settings, increase the sound pressure level ceiling, a single quad cable instead of 4 individual cables, and, hopefully, power the microphone with phantom power to eliminate the batteries in the preamp box.

For this project, I presented the development version, a monaural system with one microphone and one preamplifier. The system was powered with two 9-volt batteries. For proof of performance, I played a recording of one of my cats meowing and the quarter hour strike of my pendulum clock, similar in style to the introduction of my original microphone in Soundscapes, and a recording of the midnight traffic on IH35 passing through Austin.

In the presentation, I displayed the original microphone and preamplifier to compare to the second generation electronics.
