Ambisonic Microphone Experimental 2 at the cat feeding. (1:02)

Construction of Experimental 2 took far longer than
I had anticipated. Some of the problems were described
in Project 1. Phantom powering the mic will not happen
for now. I needed to build the new version and make
some recordings for proof-of-performance.

I knew that the construction of the tetrahedral would
take some time. At least once, the entire frame would
fall apart, and it did. And, yes, the first time when
I tried to mount final the leg of wire; the second,
when I decided on a different mounting mechanism for the
tetrahedral to all-thread tubing and added the u-shaped
wire rather than the single wire I used in the first
version. There just is not enough space for all of the
c-clamps required for heatsinking. Part of the problem is
the smell of burning flesh! Mine! The new design is much
more rugged than the first version and assures that the
tetrahedral will not shift position.
I was fortunate in that the pairs in the Mogami quad cable I selected for the output cable would all fit inside the all-thread tube if I removed the outer jacket of the cable. I also happened to have a flange mount left over from a light-hanging project in my junk box, and it which would secure the tube to the top plate of the enclosure. The flange would allow me to precisely aim and lock the tetrahedral in a forward position. The printed circuit boards slide into grooves in the sides of the enclosure, just far enough apart to allow the wires from the microphone capsules and the output cable to fit comfortably. There are also power wires going to the attached battery box. |
