Make-A-Thon - Sounds Around Town PAGE 2 and DOCUMENTATION |
One of the things I noticed while trying to locate
interesting recording locations was the lack of any
birds. None, I thought, from the UT campus to deep
south Austin, as I went looking in various parts of
town. Nada. Then I came back to the downtown area
and found Austin's "songbirds" -- the grackles.
A bit concerned about getting their calling card deposited on my microphone, I had little choice but to set up directly under their path between trees. Fortunately, there was an empty 15-minute loading zone in front of an office building and across the street from a bar and restaurant. The birds were happy to continue life as though I was not there. Grackles in surround. Be jealous, Alfred Hitchcock. Of some 6 hours of recording in the downtown area, these 2 segments were the most exciting. I really liked the recordings I did at McNeil, Texas, next to the railroad tracks, but that is another story, yet one which prompted me to visit downtown Austin. At McNeil, at least, I knew there would be a train pass by from time to time. There are Friday and Saturday nights, festivals, South by |

problem and carrying this type of gear around has some safety risks.
These sounds were recorded with my Exp2 ambisonic microphone. (See Blackbox - Fall 2009 and Soundscapes.) |
