Project #2 -
Single Point vs Discrete

DOCUMENTATION - Part 1
Exp2 dual preamplifier circuit board.
One preamp was used for each perimeter mic.
Note the Panasonic WM-55A103 capsule on the
upper right of the left preamplifer.
A stereo rendition of the surround recording (5:35),
alternating from Exp2 to discrete mics for each segment.
This is best heard with headphones. Note the phasing
issues with the discrete mics, especially from the airplane.
May in Texas is not a choice time for outdoor recording. The nearly constant gulf winds play havoc with all but the best furry windscreens. Exp2 has well-qualified foam and furry windscreens from Windcutter, but I did not want to shell out the cash for similar protection for the perimeter mics. I found some generic windscreens for SM58-style mics at a local music store. A single staple closed the bottom of the foam, and a rubber band held it snuggly in place against the printed circuit board.

I recorded about an hour and a half of 8 track audio (4 discrete mics and 4 tracks from Exp2), from which to select my presentation material for this project. All of the selections are first heard from Exp2, then from the discrete mics on the perimeter of a rectangular pattern matching the speaker layout in the ACTLab Studio.

The first selection was of a non-English speaking mother and a young child walking down the street. She was across the street while the child was closer to the microphones. I think she was telling him to get out of the street. Birds are throughout the recordings, moving around the area. Although it would have been interesting, none of the birds attacked a microphone.
