The Goth: Post-Modernity
Diffraction

The project titled Diffraction is an attempt at mapping the diffracted interference which occurs unnaturally within the current society's natural environment. By "natural environment" I am referring to the current state of today's regular routine of computer interaction. By appropriating the computer user interface as an optical instrument which is capable of shifting subjects, my main hope was to display a series of fast moving stills and hand manipulated 16mm film leader, through a monitor which has ceased to function in its expected fashion. The monitor which I happened upon one afternoon was discarded by the previous owner because of what could be considered a malfunction from its intended performance. This malfunction caused the monitor to distort the image on the screen to an unidentifiable scramble much like viewing a cable channel which you don't pay for. The last step in this project was to give it some Stellarc flash, pizzazz and artistic razzle dazzle.
The monitor gutted and primed for alteration
The fire alarm strobe light used to grab some attention
Attaching the fire alarm within the monitor's chasis
Giving it some more flash, I decided to add some christmas lights
Close-up shot of the lights and glitz
Painting the monitor's casing for presentation
Reconstructing the monitor and preparing it for presentation turned out to be a fatal affair. As I slid the casing back onto the monitor, the excess baggage within (lights) caused the case to crush what I believe to be called the cathode ray tube. The catastrophe resulted in a rather alarming glass explosion, followed by a release of noxious gasses into the atmosphere, which have horribly disfigured my ego. So, working deep into the wee hours of the night, I scraped what I could and started fresh with a new monitor, in order to present my idea for the class' consideration. However, the new monitor didn't promote the same concept of diffracted reality, and I decided to use it instead to turn my computer station into a multi-monitor work station and perpetuate my idea of the computer being my "Natural environment".

Dual Monitors with an extended desktop. It's like making an investment in workspace realty.
My last attempt at a diffracted computer user interface was to make an electromagnetic distortion field around the monitor which could be controlled by a rheostat. This idea was scrapped after I shocked myself enough times to call it quits. Also, I got the idea of setting up the dual monitor system and realized that I didn't want to permanantly 'magnet burn' the monitor.
