After completing my
first project where I documented a man spray painting various pictures
in downtown Austin, I received various critiques from my footage.
Since this is a performance class and I actually did not perform
anything, many people really wanted to see me try and paint
something. Instead of trying to seriously use spray paint to
create art, I used an alternate method of creation- the spoof. My
motivation for this character was to try and reenact a helpless rocker
that thinks he is amazing and is truly terrible inside the head of a
spray painter. Also, as an aspiring filmmaker, I used this as a
sort of experiment to understand what draws the attention of an average
film viewer. I had two "unfilm" friends hold cameras and film me
while I painted and I edited the footage together later. It was
interesting to see what actions drew there attention while I
spray painted. Not only was this very fun to do, it was a
learning
experience helping me sculpt my craft as a filmmaker.
