LIMINALITY
play along at home
the first part of the project is a short video. the content (a sped-up screen capture of my browsing routine) isn't important; the main goal was to get the participants into the passive
screenwatching state. by requiring headphones i was trying to heighten the sense of isolation. the song is "zebra trucks" by the young marble giants.
after the video plays, the browser is redirected to the first stage. each stage has two parts: first the participant is asked for some piece(s) of personal information, then they are taken to a chat room where they can talk to the other participants for a short time. each chat room is associated with a prompt. the participants are identified only by the information they have entered on the previous screen.
there are 5 stages. i chose the questions and prompts to reflect different aspects of various rites of passage and coming of age rituals that i came across when i was researching for this project. the data is all kept on the participant's computer, rather than the server, and it is cleared at the end of the session. there is no (technological) way to tell which responses belong to which people.
the final question simply asked participants to identify themselves. after submitting their response, they were instructed to take off their headphones and turn their chairs to face the center of the room. about 10 seconds afterwards the answer they had given was displayed on the screen behind them, to represent the reintegration stage of a rite of passage.
