Night Whispers is based off of a frightening dream in which I was being chased by a cardboard cutout of Luke Skywalker all night long. I own such a cutout, and the friends that I live with have used this item to scare each other at various times by setting it up in front of doors and next to bedsides so that it's the first thing that person sees upon awakening.
The project is made up of still photographs and short movie clips assembled in a sequence designed specifically to be creepy. Both were taken using a digital Sony Cyber-shot and then assembled using Sony Vegas to edit the footage. The titles and some visual effects were then added using Adobe Aftereffects. The effects added were primarily for the text and to change the lighting on a number of scenes to darken, lighten, and add glow effects on the flashlight.
This project was as much a work of sound design as it was a visual art. Using some self-recorded sounds and many free-liscense sound effects from Soundforge.com, I carefully assembled the soundtrack in Audacity and Sony Vegas to produce the effects I desired. The soundtrack is filled with whispers and suggestions, although there is no definitive meaning behind these sounds.
Overall I think the project works very well, although I feel that I should have kept all the scenes in black and white instead of jumping to color for a few of them.
