Synesthesia is the name of a neurological condition in which two or more senses become linked in the human mind. A person might experience a color with a certain scent, or imagine a certain sound when they see an object. In my project I wanted to explore color and movement being linked to sound. My original idea was to compose a musical piece and sync up the movement of various colors to each sound from using the midi data. This is not a particularly new idea, but I was hoping that something new might come out during the project construction.
Ultimately the original idea seemed to difficult to proceed with, so I started thinking about associating images with different colors instead, since you get more visually for free when using video instead of trying to manufacture special effects. Unfortunately, my decision to use video seems like it stripped some of the originality out of my original idea. The footage used was taken from along Town Lake (Austin) by myself.
I composed the music for this piece using Logic 5.5 and various orchestral samples. I am quite pleased with the result, although it was difficult to separate every track and reassmble the audio in AfterEffects, which I used to generate the waveforms that appear as part of the visuals.
I've been told that with the text the finished product looks more like a bad Zales commercial rather than an Actlab project, and I'll admit that the text lacks inspiration. I decided to leave the words in, however.
