This was my first Actlab project, and also one of my early attempts at recording and editing actual shots containing live acting. I think it shows.
The original idea for this was hatched by my friend John, who appears as the main character in the so-called "interview." Time is a black box in a sense, because we are all trapped within its mechanics but don't really understand the nature of it. We took this serious notion to some ridiculous conclusions through the use of utterly fabricated and supposedly humorous data.
In the end, I think this project proved to be too long, extremely tedious to edit, and not terribly successful, judging from the audience's reaction. I didn't cut it short enough, although part of this was because I wasn't sure how to correctly edit documentary style interviews. I needed frequent cuts because of mediocre takes and long pauses, but I really didn't have much to cut away to during the talking, so my options were to fabricate images to show during the cuts or to fade out and back in, or to cut sharply. I tried all three, but never really got the hang of what I was doing, editing wise.
I tried to add some cheesy effects to spice up parts that were supposed to be funnier than they turned out to be, but I think it only helped confirm this short film as a goofy bore.
Either way, it was good experience and it features some of the many many antics of my crazy friend John. If you can hang in there, I hope you find it amusing and perhaps even eye-opening to some of the ways in which we are trapped in time. I really, REALLY hate time and the frequent lack of it.
