PROJECT ONE (2.17.2005) - My
first project relates mainly to
the piece TABOO which we
viewed in class, moreso in regards to Kit Carson. Although Kit
and the main character in my project were feminine and females
physically, inside they felt male. For obvious reasons, I choose
a football theme for my project, for the sport is male dominated and
male privilaged. I felt that if women, by physical means,
internally feel to be male, their appearance of female may stop their
allegiance and activities that privilage the male gender or that are
associated with strictly male activities and behaviors. So, for
this reason, as I'm sure there are various reasons, my character makes
the physical transistion from female to male, to be more satisfied as
being part of her/him true gender, and to be accepted and to engage in
their true gender social institutions.
PROJECT
TWO (3.24.2005) - DISCLAIMER:It's
not originally what I had envisioned, hoped, and planned for, but...
My
second project developed out of my fandom for the TV show American
Idol, so
when I saw the original footage, I thought it pertained to our class,
in which I saved (recorded) the footage and wanted to make a creative
project with it. There is a little boy reference, which relates
to Sandy's experience with an ignorant guy who confronted Sandy with
"What the fuck?" I wanted to compare his ignorance to that of a
child's innate innocence and naiveness. At the end, the distorted
images, represent confusion and "Matt's" "abnormalness" in terms of how
the judges and a majority of how the audience will view him.
Androgyny
is a term used to describe the act of taking on an ambiguous sexual
identity. The stereotypical gender identity lines are "blurred"
in terms of possessing both feminine and masculine traits.
Reknowned musician David Bowie, known to some as the "King of Glam
rock" of the 1970's, epitomizes the act of Androgyny. Davie Bowie
went through different flamboyant "drag" acts that were his personas
both off and on stage. David Bowie wanted to push the boundaries
of what a typical rocker male was. Instead, he defied the
masculine "rock act" with one of his most popular acts/phases which was
his character Ziggy Stardust, which consisted of bright dyed hair,
glitter, make-up and tight clothes. Bowie went to the extreme to
tell the public he was homosexual "just for the fun of it."
Bowie's "reinvention" inspired me for my final project. One of
the main concepts I received from this course was to embrace
uniqueness. If an individual can not fit in with their own kind,
if they can not fit in with other "different" people, then screw
everyone and be yourself!
