Tandemsexual is an exploration of gender. It is a compilation of photographs taken and then edited together in Final Cut Pro. The final product challenges the viewer by leaving the viewer with questions about the sexual orientation of both subjects. The questions that the video intends to leave the viewer with involve tone of voice, clothing, facial hair, length of hair, vocabulary and the social norms of general dating etiquette. The video portrays a man and a woman that have switched roles normal to our society. They are on a date, both cross-dressed. The woman has taken on the role of the man, not only in her dress attire, but in her language as well. She leads the tandem ride, buys the ice cream and makes all the decisions. The man has taken on the role of a woman by riding on the back of the tandem, having his ice cream bought for him and being more indecisive than his cross-dressed counterpart. There is also a repetition of the words "beautiful" and "handsome" in order to bring attention to the grammar of gender and the assignment of these two particular words to be either feminine or masculine. The tone of voice is also meant to confuse their sexual orientation. The man's voice is being read by a woman mimicking a man's voice and the woman's voice is being read by a man mimicking a woman's voice. In the end, the audience is still unclear that the two are cross-dressed at all. The small details, such as the man's moustache and the woman's breasts, are not immediately identifiable and are still not a way for the audience to be sure of the sex or gender of either subject.
