At age 15 I learned that even your most private thoughts aren't private. I used to keep a diary thinking that I could look
back and laugh at myself years later. I soon realized that those thoughts would back fire. My mom had intruded on my
life and in my head. She broke into the one place that I had all to myself. My life changed and I learned to trust no one.
I didn't let people in my life and it seemed that every time I did, I was given a bite of reality and reminded why I shouldn't.
When I came to college three years later, I lived with yet another person who could not be trusted. I was forced to move
after my first semester and switch roommates in the dorms. This proved to be a valuble change in my life. I was blessed
with an angel who watched over me for no gain of her own, and for once, truseed a new person in my life. One day, as
I lay in bed, she brought me some incense and a journal to write in. It was called "Ruby" (this is also my birthstone). The
oder it emitted was said to project strength; something I never had much of. From that time on I decided to be strong and
again, find a place where only I can go. I started writing again and every time I did, I would light the incense and travel
where no one could hurt me. It's too bad that I can't go there all the time, but at least I have my secret garden. This
soundscape represents some events that have occured in my life over the past two semesters. I tried hard to step out my
private space and allow people to look inside, if not for just one moment. I tried to take some risks and use some lyrics
by Ani DiFranco to illustrate some very similar events in my life. I hope that the outcome is clear and that you are able to
enjoy at least the composition of sounds and possible reflect on your own personal space.
My first soundscape for a baby "Tickle me Big Bird" was more of an emotional attachment to this piece. All the music
used gave a specific memorie for a hard and happy time of my life. I wanted something that was up beat and fun. I had
just met someone who would change my life forever. My best friend here at UT and person that I owe most of my
strength to. She supported me when no one else would and helped me through a rough time. There's a song in there
that speaks of wishin' and hopin' and there was a lot of that for me. My favorite band is called Vallejo and the first beat
that is somewhat similar to Sesame Street is from one of their CDs. There's Ani DiFranco which was my music choice
for a very long time. I felt a connection to some of the lyrics and held on to singing to rid anger. There are both hard
and happy memories connected to this soundscape, so enjoy.
Sexual curiosity is an issue that people deal with different ways. There are also many sexual undertones written within
music. I think dancing and just the way a body flows can be sexual and what sounds are directly linked to sex. What
instruments and various beats sound "sexy"? I decided to use Schaeffer's idea of musique concrete. I wanted to get
various recognizable sounds and manipulate them by speed or otherwise and piece them together to sound like a
session of two people having sex. Along with different sounds, I would incorporate beats that may not have sounded
"sexy" by themselves, but acompanied by the rest of the sounds, they adopted a connection to a different emotion and
feeling. I was successful in capturing sounds, however there were too many going on at once to get it all completed.
I took the main sounds (moaning etc.) and found sounds in music that were similar to the less recognizable sounds (slaps,
buckles, ect.) I put all these together to create this final piece. I hope you follow the narrative and maybe see if you can
pull apart sounds and find that they aren't all link with sex by themselves.
sound database:
As a kid, I always remember having a computer in the house. Before I ever knew what the internet was, I remember this sound. It's especially strange to recall those memories seeing
that a dial up connections these days becomes more and more obsolete.
In order to create my first project in this class, I used a clip from a song by Vallejo, my favorite band. The song has an up beat and tends to be more of a funny song.
I was walking around my apartment looking for something to record and my TV was on. This is the ticking sound from the TV show 60 Minutes.
One of the first things I like seeing when I come home is the light on my answering machine blinking with messages for me. I actually recorded this last semester for a sound effect for
a film I was working on, so I decided to use this with my sound database.
Along with the answering machine beep, I also had a phone ringing, so that's where this sound comes from
I noticed that whenever I come home, as most pets do, they recognize what sounds are made and react to them. This is true of my cat Squigglez, so I recorded the sounds made when
I'm unlocking the door and home and opening it.
For my chapter presentation in class I did a chaper about water music. In an attempt to create my own water music I recorded a faucet running.
As a kid in elementary school, we used to play this game called "Trashcketball". We would learn spelling, math, history and the like. A sound I remember is that of crumling paper.
I had some equipment with me as I was drving home from San Antonio and got the idea to record this. When I was in school, my friends at my table would listen in to jump into different
conversations and put them together to make different conversations of our own.
I also recorded this while coming home.
This is a sound that I used in my project 2. It's a heartbeat with a deep beet behind it.
Again, a sound for my second project. a friend was kind enough to lend me her lungs.

I take my roommate to and from work everday and as you can tell from another sound, I'm impatient in traffic, so I recorded this particular inersectin in Austin.
A weekly routine is for my roommate and I to go to Slick Willies pool bar and play some pool. We're not ver good, but we have fun anyway. This is a relatively new tradition, so
this sound brings back a new memorie.
I found this online while searching for information about the water chapter that I gave a presentation on.
A random sound I found online
This is actually the sound of my refirdgerator at home.Nice huh?
My cat always has to be right under my chin when she's sleeping with me. This is often the sound I hear while falling asleep.
A funny thing I found online while looking for water music stuff. Just thought I could use it somehow.
Road trips always have this sound. This was collected in that same drive.
