RECORDING & PRODUCTION OF THE PLAY
Recording of the Nebbish radio play took place of the course of three weeks. It took more than ten different sessions in the KVRX production studio with seven different actors to complete recording of the quality and caliber wanted. It was very much a learning experience for me-- I'd never used ProTools or a patch bay before, and I was very happy to pick up the production knowledge that I did.
It was important to me that as much of the recording as possible be true to the way that live broadcasts were done in the golden age of radio. Unfortunately, I didn't have any foley artists at my discretion, nor did I have all of the voice actors in the same place at the same time. I refused to record different peoples' parts separately if they were interacting within the same scene. Additionally, due to time constraints and in keeping with OTR tradition, there were times that we were recording one scene as I was writing the next.
Andrew Shearer aided immensely as production guru, helping with the recording as well as the mastering. I was utterly unfamiliar with ProTools compression and filtering techniques, and Andrew lent an incredible amount of education and support.
