INTRO

In this film, I hoped to make notice of the clash between the digital world and the real world. The way these two are becoming more and more intertwined. To tap into the realms of digital versus reality, I took closer look at the divide between the two. I created a world where the computer world and the real world combine dramatically for the audience. I start with focusing on objects and my reality. I then took notice of the digital world. The character found she was able to place real life objects into the screen of her computer. A question arises, “what would you put in the computer if you had endless ability?”

CRAFT

I wanted to divide this short from the beginning and the end, focusing on reality in the first half and computer land in the second half. I took close ups of the objects in the room for the beginning. Visually, I wanted to capture the smaller details that go over looked when using digital media. The second half had me placing objects into the computer. This was inter cut with filters over the part where the character was taking down the items, to have a disoriented and unrealistic feel. For the insertion of items into the computer screen, I positioned the camera in place and took B-roll of the computer sitting with the screen up. I then left the camera in the exact same place and filmed the character sliding objects over the keyboard with the screen down. I used a split screen, which was able to make the character appears as if she was placing the objects into the screen of the computer.
My biggest technical challenge was getting the split screen to look like it was one shot. Because I was taking things down from my room and moving about, shadows changed the color on one side of the screen. Being an amateur in effects, I color corrected to the best of my ability.

SEQUITUR

I wanted to take an over the top approach and end the short with the character entering the digital world also. I purposefully exaggerated to make a point of how serious this relationship is and where society is headed. After the character acknowledges the ability to place objects within the computer, I quickly move to the computer consuption and take over. It could also be read as a surrender to the computer world. This mirrors the ideology of digital consumption and its dominating aftermath. The curiosity of this other world conquered what is the “authentic” and left her reality empty.
