Project 3 - 2001: An ACTLab Odyssey

For the final project, I collaborated with my friend Jeff from the Dream and Delirium class to create what we called a moveable band. The idea was that I would strap my bass drum to my back and snare to my front, and then create an apparatus that would allow me to play both while walking. Jeff would then make an attachment for his theremin to strap to his body along with a back-pack amp and battery so he too could join me.

As the project progressed, we decided that we would rescore a scene from Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" while moving about the room with our band. We first headed over to Jerry Champkis's house in order to use his shop for building out instrument appendages. We spent a good four hours over there working with random bike rack parts, wood, rope, etc., in order to make everything mobile.

We then headed over to Jeff's for some late night practice so we could figure out what we were going to play over the video. We chose the scene towards the end of the film where the astronaut is flying through a myriad of colors and shapes in space. It had a nice rhythm and naturally growing intensity that worked well with our instruments. We put together a simple composition of building drums and theremin which complimented the picture very well. We simply marched in as the scene began, played the best that we could, and slowly marched out at the end. The result was a silly, but hopefully enjoyable, performance.
