Virtual Existence
(Tentative Title)
The idea here is to create a piece of art which expresses man's existence in the virtual world using materials in the real world. The actual project will consist of a model head, made out of styrophoam and paper mache. The head will then be painted like a map of the world, and placed in a painted black box. Plastic or paper mache arms will protrude out of the neck (tentative) and frame the face. Then pasted all over the head will be references to life in the virtual world (i.e. web addresses, images, email, chat rooms, androids). I haven't decided whether or not eyes will be pasted over the black box or not. For an explanation on what each of these things mean, read on in Project Explanation. |
Project Explanation
Each step I've taken to create this model head has a purpose. The head itself, which is painted like the world, represents the virtual world which we create personally in our own head. The hands that might be attached represent the tools we use to create this world. We use our hands to travel, create, learn, explore, and exist in cyberspace. Each piece of paper that is pasted on the head represent some aspect of our virtual existence. For example, the web address symbolizes our home in space, and the homes we visit. When going into a chat room, we our greeted by a virtual android that acts as our guide. The eyes, which is tentative, represent that even in space our moves are being monitored. |
Expectations
I want my audience to feel a little creeped out by the head just because I feel that the virtual world is a little creepy. But most importantly I want them to see the way we have an effect on the virtual world, how the virtual world has an effect on us, and how much different it is from our real existence. |
