Lindsey's Blackboxes

Fall 2004

"We as humans are hardwired to be pattern-making individuals."

-Sandy Stone

August 30th, 2004: It was the first day of Blackbox class. I had never had an Actlab class before. My first impressions of the class included things like confusion and bewilderment. All I could think was, "What the hell are my Blackboxes going to be?!" It seemed to be an ambiguous topic, especially in a class that had a fluid structure and where projects have no rigid guidelines. However, my curiosity would have to be satisfied. I vowed to myself NOT to drop the class even though I was in the dark as far as what to do. As the semester progressed, I became more aware of my surroundings. I tried to find a Blackbox in everything because I was consisitently looking for a new idea for my next project. I feel that I grasped the idea of a Blackbox. However, I'm still learning how to convey my ideas in a clear and coherent manner. As I approach the end of the semester, I'm trying to scratch the surface of anything that comes my way. I've learned that digging a little deeper, turning over stones, and altering my perspectives let me see things in a way where I have to allow for randomness in the pattern of my everyday life.

Project #1: Airport Security

Airport Security is a blackbox in the way that it can often times be an illusion. In my opinion, airport security is a tool used by the government so it can flex its "muscles" and keep people under control.  My first blackbox project examines the environment in an airport that promotes a fear of danger.

Project #2: Small Talk

Conversation can be an amazing blackbox. Our thoughts are our own and when we converse with other people, we decide how much information we share and how truthful that information will be. In the name of politeness and simplicity, small talk or chit-chat can become routine. Before you know it, we've all become too busy to take five minutes and have a meaningful conversation with someone. For my second blackbox I take a glimpse at some opinions on small talk.

Project #3: Football

Football is just an athletic sport... but not really. Every autumn college football can be something of a lifestyle for many. As my final blackbox, I chose to investigate traditions, fandom, and all that makes football so consuming.
