WAM
began on April 12, 1997 after an assuming telephone sales person asked Holly
Fitzpatrick if they could talk to her husband. Holly was fed up with society’s
obsession with the married female role model. She called her five sisters and
urged them to join her fight to rid the world of the archaic ideal of marriage.
Lolly and Trolley withheld their support for their sister being that they were
both married at the time. But Polly and Collie both agreed that marriage not
only oppresses women, but endangers their very existence. Lolly and Trolley
joined in 2000 after their combined total of six marriages ended.
The purpose of WAM is to
expose the fraudulent foundations on which a marriage is built and to demonstrate
the detrimental affects marriage has on womanhood. Marriage began as a way to
suppress women and to reward their male counterparts. Rarely are the scales
of marriage balanced; continually favoring men more than women. WAM wants to
dispel society’s glorification of this unreasonable, tyrannizing, legally binding
union.
