The Project: Project 3: Ventriloquist
The Purpose:
To explore the use of a new medium in producing art that I had been interested in for a long time while maintaining dream-like quality in the product. |
The Process:
Attempt 1: step 1: Sculpt the head out of clay. step 2: Rub Vaseline on the sculpture. step 3: Mix the alginate. step 4: Pack the alginate on quickly before it sets. step 5: Apply plaster bandages. Let dry. step 6: Remove the back half of the plaster shell and slice the alginate. Take out the sculpture. step 7: Mix pigment into silicone and pour in the silicone. Attempt 1 FAILED. The alginate didn't hold the shape well enough. step 8: To make the failed attempt into something usable, put inside pickle jar with food dye, baking soda, and a glowstick. Attempt 2: step 1: Make clay sculpture (already done). step 2: Pigment the silicone and paste it directly on to the sculpture in thick layers. step 3: peel off silicone. Attempt 2 FAILED. Silicone not thick enough. Looks like shed skin. Attempt 3: step 1: Sculpt clay head (already done) and apply Vaseline. step 2: Cut a bucket in half and screw support screws in from the bottom for the sculpture to rest on. step 3: Pour in ultracal around the sculpture to about halfway on the head, dispace with sculpture, let cure. step 4: Pull head from the ultracal. step 5: Do the same for the back half of the head. step 6: Pigment silicone and paint it on in thick layers inside of the cast. Let cure and peel away. step 7: Paint the silicone mask. step 8: Add another layer of clear silicone on top for a wet look. SUCCESS. |
