Here's how we were able to legitimize this act for class.
Weird: Fighting in class is pretty weird, for me at least.
Science: Science can be defined as a process of learning through experience.
We presented a fight "Fight Club" style. Tyler asks, "How can you know yourself if you've never been in a fight?" I say we can make ourselves through the new experience of our first fight. Our experiences provide the pieces with which we interpret the world.
On the surface, there was a critique of grades debated during the trash-talking session. Being done in class, the critique should be extended to this class. Quantifying art? Come on now.
Masochism. There are an infinite number of possible new experiences through which we can make ourselves. So why did we choose this one?
Some of the possible explanations include: overcoming personal fear, shock value for the show, to look tough... Well getting beat up by a fag probably won't help that.
We presented this performance as a representation of a past event in Cal's life - a sign signifying old events and their emotions.
Our world is construed through signs. A sign can be defined as anything that can lie to you. For the performance, we lied to the audience. Like words, mass media, electronic communications, etc., this performance couldn't reflect what really happened - just like a video of the fight wouldn't entirely capture what happened, just like these theories are inadequate.
However, as this representation demonstrates, the inadequate symbols, the media, the representations themselves create new meanings, create new boundaries with which to play. It is in these failed signs that cannot represent true meaning that we find the meaning in our lives.
