Project 2 - Do-It-Yourself Theremin

.home.

With this project, I set out to make a theremin from scratch.

I enlisted the help of local wizard Jerry Chamkis.

Most theremins utilize two separate oscillators, one for volume and one for pitch.

My theremin consists only of a pitch function and works by virtue of a simple logic chip (74HC14). Combine this with one capacitor and one resistor and you have what is basically the simplest oscillator imaginable.

The original design worked like an authentic theremin because its modulation was driven by capacitance. That design however was not sensitive enough to make a very impressive presentation.

By adding a photoresistor, the theremin became optically driven and is responsive to variances in light. The quality of light is also a factor as interlaced light from a TV screen or cycling light from a florescent light changes the sound response.

Audio Samples :

Normal Light (mp3)

...also... THROWIES!

Throwies are LEDs with magnets attached. They stick to metallic surfaces and can provide you with hours of non-traditional / illegal entertainment.

Materials: LEDs, 3V disk batteries, Magnets

(I suggest buying in bulk.)
