sounds.

1-31-02

coughing : this is the sound of me coughing my lungs out after a week of the flu. ugh..

tv background noise : in 318 i learned of the importance of having a good room-tone on your soundtrack. this is a poor-man's room-tone, which works pretty well.

2-7-02

hot for teacher : this is the intro to van halen's "hot for teacher", where the alex van halen (the drummer) imitates the sound of an idling harley davidson. This sound has always fascinated me, as it uses a "musical" instrument to reproduce the "noise" of a motorcycle engine.

drinking sprite : this sound was recorded for use in my first project, though it wasn't used. it's the sound of someone putting ice into a cup, and then pouring sprite into the cup.

2-21-02

cartoon music : this is the musical soundtrack for an episode of "tom & jerry". i found this interesting, as you can almost follow the action from the music alone, without watching the cartoon.

city traffic : this a pretty good soundscape of a city street.

2-28-02

sirens : the sound of a glissing police siren. to be used in my second project.

primus' mr. krinkle : this is the intro to mr. krinkle, by primus. it's a good example of a musical use of glissando in modern music.

3-7-02

jet passing: this is the sound of a glissing jet engine going overhead. to be used in my 2nd project.

firetruck: this is the sound of a firetruck leaving the station. the sound of the revving engine, the murmur of the CB, and the wail of the siren.

3-19-02

the humpty dance slide: to be used in the 3rd part of my project, either as the intro, or as a break.

a truck driving by: this is a good example of the doppler effect - a naturally occuring glissando. it will be used in my project. (well, it was going to be used, but it wasn't in the right format)

3-28-02

walking out: this is a sound i made for a performance project i had in a class last year. it's people walking out of the door... i 'multi-tracked' it by splitting the sounds onto left and right channels, giving me two tracks to work with, as i didn't have access to pro-tools.

pinball ufo: this is from a pinball game i have on my computer. it sounds like a ufo. i messed around with the panning to make it interesting.

4-4-02

air escaping from a ball: this is a big bouncy ball that i have. the sound is from me letting the air out, and then plugging it up...

pumping up the ball: this is the same ball, being pumped up. in reverse. with some panning.

4-11-02

pinball sound 2: for some reason this program has a ton of interesting sounds.

spinning twirly sound: cool random twirling sound.

4-18-02

turn the water off: this is an EVP of a spirit wanting the water to be turned off.

i'm upstairs: this is an EVP of a spirit saying "I'm upstairs". the reason i've included these EVPs, is that I'm fascinated by the question of where the sound actually came from. is it random noise, coincidentally combining to make something reminiscent of human language? or are spirits manifesting themselves in sound? or are we creating the whole thing in our psyche?
