My final presentation is a theatrical performance to a song entitled “Horizons.” It’s a song I fell in love with when I was in high school and I really wanted to use it.

 

The song is about a tribe in South Africa. Cave drawings were found depicting an English fleet arriving. The tribe believed that these ships carried gods that were going to show them great new things. However, with the help of surrounding tribes, the English slaughtered the entire tribe.

 

I decided to create a character that was born with ambiguous genitalia and realized by observing the surrounding people that they were different. Instead of seeing the English as saviors, the medical community is seen as the saviors.

 

There is a death and a re-birth at the end as surgery doesn’t solve everything.
