Escape!
Escape! Is the first painting I've done. It was done with acrylics on canvas, and also included wire and foamboard. The project is rooted in the idea of the Uncanny experience being stimulated by crossing the boundary from man-made to real. In this painting, stickmen (visually iconic of humanity, though they inspire no pathos) are trying to escape a huge ghostly horror which is devouring them. The horror went unpainted, which to me made it creepy as a sort of anti-material consuming force.

One stickman is so affeared of the monster that he's able to crawl out of the frame and into our reality. However, he's stuck in a transitional state. The expression on his face belies a certain uncertainty- whether it's about his ability to get out, about the new world he's emerging into or about the monster's ability to follow him is left up to the viewer.

In the painting I did my best to include a lot of signifiers of depth, with (I hope) some success. The clouds are much thicker forms as they approach the viewer, and the monster's arm seems to be urgently stretching towards us. There are two planes of action too- the nearer with several stickmen and the further with the field scene.

I'm pretty satisfied with the painting. I think it's fun and I'm pretty happy with how the clouds turned out.
