This project was a collaboration with Sarah Kruger. It's pretty clearly not my standard fare, but I'm still pretty happy with it. We came up with the whole concept together, and in general she was in charge of sound, editing and the documentary shots, while I was in charge of the projection images.
The video touches on a variety of concepts, which are united under the theme of religion and dispersed under dream-logic. Authorship, myth, dedication and retrograde morning were all guiding principles in composing the movie. More importantly than how we constructed it though, is the overall effect it makes. It still gives me the willies watching it, and I hope it does for you too.
We've discussed in class how the Uncanny is a very personal experience, and I think this may be a case of that. For me, this video preserves the mystery of religion which I felt as a child, but the mystery is filmic rather than spiritual. This represents a shift in how I've percieved holy experience that I haven't yet entirely folded into my identity. Being confronted by it is Uncanny for me.
The process of video feedback worked like this- we got a close up of Sarah's parts (eye, mouth, hand) and then went into Final Cut Pro and matted out everything around the part that we didn't want. Then I made several copies of the image, resized and staggered them. This was then played out to a camera, and from a camera to a projector, which then projected the image back on to Sarah. The projected image was recorded by a second camera. We also did some live feedback, but didn't feel that it fit into the piece.
