In this project I wanted to look at the idea of subjectivity, and the ways that perspective can change that which is monstrous. So I chose an image of two little boys, something that I feel conveys a since of innocence, wearing t-shirts that convey what is to me a message of absolute hatred, bigotry and malice. Then I used chocolate as a medium to redner the image, usingbittersweet for my canvas and milk chocolate for my paintbrush. The idea was that the dark chocolate would represent the complexity of the issue and the image, and for that reason I also carved the image into the canvas. Milk chocloate was then piped over the carving to say on the surface there is a very basic, primitive quality both to the fear the image engenders in me, and to the sophistication of the children wearing the t-shirts.
When I poured the chocolate I made sure that ti was temepered in the center, thus making it lustrous and perfect, and untempered at the edge, which caused the chocolate to "bloom", which represents the corruption of the children's innocence, which lies on the periphery of the image.
