I was very shocked and disturbed by this project. I
questioned why the filmmaker felt she had to go this
far to make her point. and what was her point/purpose?
i don't see how this helps the problem. we obviously
know it happens. will some male who saw this film
think twice or stop something like this from happening
if he's ever in a similar situation?
i believe everyone has the right to express themselves
as they choose, as others have said. that also allows
me the freedom to express myself the way i choose
about said expression. i can question and not agree
with it. it did seem this project just had shock
value. i didn't see any reedeeming value in it. (i am
kind of regurgitating what others have said, but i
agree with these points)
also: i don't think the shock/dislike of the words
"what the fuck was that was that?!?" are comparable to
the shock/dislike of the project we saw (for obvious
reasons). and if there's allowance of expression of
the latter then that should apply to the former.
i also question what we define as "acting." the rape
victim wasn't acting out oral sex. she was actually
performing it. and i question how far the "acting" of
the rape actually went. it looked pretty damn real to
me. i mean, they weren't "acting" like they had their
hands on her breasts. okay, maybe i'm being
knitpicky. i guess actors in hollywood films really
kiss and touch each other in love/sex scenes.
i think we should have talked about the film after we
saw it. so, to answer jane's question, yes, let's talk
about it on monday. i realize the filmmaker was
unavailable. but you can't show that to a group of
people knowing that they are going to be affected
deeply by it and not let them release that.
obviously this student took a risk, but what was the
purpose of the risk? risk for the sake of risk? i
don't want to come up with a risky project just to
satisfy a course requirement. i want to be passionate
about my project and do something that challenges me.
something i care about. i know sandy said we didn't
have to go to that extreme. but i still felt i had to
do some sort of pornagraphic/sexually explicit project
to convey that i'm taking a risk, after i saw this.
what risk was being taken by the person who did the
metallic bust/statuette thing? i think you can take a
personal risk that's not that extreme or not take a
risk and still do a good project.
but i guess sandy has shown us projects that weren't
as in-your-face as this one. i remember the asian (?)
painting and the squiggly line computer print out
thing. what were the risks in these?
this one goes to sandy: what theories were tied to
Consumption? i'd like to know.
some more on Consumption: the question of: we had the
right to get up an leave if we so chose. well, i
didn't know what i was in for at the very beginning of
this shocking ride. once i realized (i remembered
sandy had described it to us on a previous occasion) i
...well looking back on it...it was almost like i was
a deer in headlights. i was paralyzed. also, we are
students in a class and this was being presented to us
by our prof, as an example of a good final
project--with this is mind, i don't personally think
it's was as easy to just get up and go.
random thoughts: i wondered why a woman (both
director and actress) would do a project like this.
and how you approach people to do such a project. i
also figured the guys would be all about it. and i
guess that's being stereotypical, but these are just
the thoughts that came into my head after viewing
this. it reminded me of "The Accused," only more
intense/extreme.
don't know what else to say other than we've obviously
been affected, but shouldn't the goal be to incite
change? and has that been done here? or have a group
of people just been made to feel unconfortable for
varying degrees of time? and if the answer is yes, i
reiterate, what is the point?
that's all for now.
freddie.
