Objects of power are used
around the world for good luck, protection, reminders, connection to spirits,
and emotional strength. For my own object of power, I combined three small
charms which each had meaning for me. First, the key. I have always liked old
keys, and I picked this one up at an antique show several years ago. Some have
suggested I like key imagery because I have a distinct need for control in my
life, and I am very possessive about both my property and my emotions. Second,
the bee. This is a silver pendant, with the body of the bee made out of amber
with gold flecks in it. It was given to me by my father, who is an extremely
powerful influence in my life and my main role model, and it also somewhat
suggests pollination and therefore fertility—a very important aspect of my life,
since my maternal instincts are strong. Third, the Celtic knot. This was cut out
of brass by my stepfather, whom I have despised since the day I met him. But
despite our personality clashes, I do respect that he has an amazing gift for
crafts, metalwork and woodwork, and that was one of the few activities through
which we could interact without devolving into screaming. It is a reminder that
I don’t always have to hate him, and it helps me be tolerant in my life as a
whole.
