   I often struggle with this myself--especially when class lets out
early or the discussion ends up going nowhere fast.
   How about this for a common thread: "We're all equals in an open
community seeking to negotiate meanings out of the ways gender and
sexuality are represented in the mass media." In this sense there is no
top-down authority figure, there is no closure, and there is no truth.
If you want to talk about something we're not talking about, just shout it
out. You did this with the music stuff. Right on!
