I think you're right, Christianne. It seems simplistic to put the blame on one thing. I was bulimic for a few years in college, and I don't think anyone has ever considered me terribly weak. Actually, according to my therapist then, my own personal experience with an eating disorder had to do more with a desire to be very strong --control issues -- that manifested in my relationship with my body. I read Naomi Wolf's book and all the requisite eating disorder books (my nutritionist and shrink made me, then I got hooked: I mean, with titles like_Fat is a Feminist Issue_ and _Feeding the Hungry Heart_, how can you resist?)--and a lot of it made sense. I could see myself to some extent as being influenced by media and cultural images of women --but there were a lot of personal things involved as well. My relationship to my mother for one, or having been molested as a kid another. So no, I don't think you can break the problem down so easily. But then what kind of problem can you break down that way? Nothing interesting in my opinion.

AAAH interesting. who's to blame? I don't think it's that easy to
point
fingers at any one particular thing or person. I think that in some
ways
the girls can be blamed but come on now, it's not like there is
something
wrong with the entire female gender that makes them too weak to overcome
eating disorders or something. there has to be a reason as to why
diseases
like anorexia are usually found in women and not men. it can't all be
their
own doing.
