RTF 336 - Special Projects in Radio-Television-Film
Prerequisite: consent of department Chair.
Comprehensive research or creative projects in areas of special interest developed and executed by the student under faculty supervision. Conference course.
RTF 359 - Hispanic Images and Counterimages
Investigates the history of Hispanic representation in Hollywood movies and television, the stereotypes that have developed, reasons for and significance of such representations, and the impact of Hispanic filmmakers.
RTF 365 - Hispanic Audiences & Current Affairs.
This course explores contemporary issues relating to Hispanic media and audiences. Developing issues relating to mass communication and other ethnic groups will also be discussed, such as images, advertising, marketing strategies, and media ownership.
RTF 365 - Media and Ethnic Groups
This course will help students learn 1) how the United States is increasingly becoming a multiethnic and multiracial society, 2) how the major ethnic groups in the U.S. have been portrayed in the mass media, 3) how those portrayals can affect perceptions and understanding of people of different ethnic/racial backgrounds and cultures, and 4) a brief history and current status of the ethnic/minority-oriented mass media in the U.S.
RTF 365 - Latino Audiences.
The purpose of this course is to learn about important demographic changes in the United States; the portrayal of Latinos in mainstream mass media; the effects those portrayals have on perceptions and understanding between people of different ethnic/racial backgrounds and cultures; patterns of (un)employment of Latinos in the mass media; the history and current status of selected Latino-oriented media in the U.S.; and the role of mass media in Latino politics.
