GRAMMAR - SPELLING - PUNCTUATION TEST
All RTF majors must take and pass the Grammar-Spelling-Punctuation
(GSP) test prior to requesting consent for any upper-division RTF
course. This means that you must have passed the GSP test prior to the
consent period during which you request your first upper division RTF
classes. The Department of Radio-TV-Film encourages you to take the
GSP as early as possible so that you avoid the common problem of
³forgetting² to take the test until it is too late to take part in the
consent process. (Please see Consent pages for information.)
The GSP is offered several times per semester, although the Measurement
and Evaluation Center, which administers the test, maintains no
permanent testing schedule. Dates are scattered throughout the year,
usually just before the beginning of the semester, just prior to
consent, and near the end of the semester. Test dates and times are
posted outside the RTF Undergraduate Advisor¹s office (CMA 7.230), as
well as outside the RTF Department office (CMA 6.118). You may also
find out test dates by contacting the Measurement and Evaluation Center
(MEC) at 471-3032.
The GSP tests are offered several times during the test-day, usually
every hour on the hour between 10 am and 3 pm. You will be assigned a
test time when you pay your fee the day prior to the test. The GSP is
a 60-question computerized test offered at the MEC at 2616 Wichita. A
passing score is 45 and above. You may take the test up to three (3)
times. The test costs $25.00 each time. Financial aid recipients may
be able to obtain a one-time only fee waiver.
If you have not obtained a passing score after your third try, you may
petition the RTF Department for permission to test again. If English
is your second language, you may appeal to the RTF Department to waive
the three-trial limitation. Remember that you may not register for,
nor take, any upper division RTF classes unless you first pass the GSP
test. Petition/appeal forms are available in the RTF Office at CMA
6.118.
To help students prepare, the Learning Skills Center offers GSP
preparation and tutoring with review classes, self-help in the verbal
lab, annotated GSP tests, relevant exercises and reference materials.
The Learning Skills Center is located at Jester A332 (471-3614). You
are strongly encouraged to make use of this free resource.
GSP Test-Taking Procedure
- The DAY PRIOR to the test date, go to the MEC and pay your test fee
($25) between 9 am and 3:30 pm only. The MEC will not sell any tickets
after 3:30 pm nor on the day of the test. The MEC will accept cash,
check, money order (payable to UT Austin) or financial aid fee
waiver.
- At the time you pay your test fee you will receive a test-room
admission slip assigning you to a test time. On the test day, you
should arrive at MEC no later than the time listed on your admission
slip. Bring a form of identification that includes both your signature
and photograph (such as your student ID). Without such identification,
you will be admitted only if you bring and relinquish a photograph of
yourself.
- You will know the results at the time you complete the test. The
results will be transmitted to the Department of Radio-TV-Film by the
following day.
- If you have a temporary or long-term disability, you should contact the
Measurement and Evaluation Center at least a week in advance of the
test date to specify the conditions you need.
