PRODUCTION TRACK
(Film Production, Video, Audio: sub-sections below)
The courses in this track give students hand-on experience in the
different fields of film, video and audio production. All courses in
this area require classroom sessions complemented by additional
laboratory hours and production hours. Since courses in this area are
sequential, and time consuming, students are recommended to select one
production track only. Admission to production courses is highly
competitive and not guaranteed by admission to the University. Please
see "Production" described previously on this page.

FILM PRODUCTION
- RTF 330L - INTERNSHIP IN FILM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
- Pass/Fail course. Not restricted to production students; open to any
qualified RTF student. Additional Prerequisites: 2 upper division RTF
courses, and UT GPA of 2.5 minimum. The purpose of this course is to
provide professional internship experiences with television and radio
stations, film and video production companies, governmental agencies
and media production units, audio recording studios, and industrial
corporations. Two Mandatory meetings.
- RTF 344 - Special Applications of Media Production
- Special probems involved in audio, film and video production.
- RTF 366 - Film Production I
- This course introduces the student to the fundamental concepts,
theories, and techniques of black and white, non-sync sound, 16-mm
filmmaking. Students get hands-on experience in the operation of
necessary production equipment. Individual and collective production
assignments, with emphasis on visualization of ideas and critical
evaluation of the visual text.
- RTF 367K - Film II: Principles of Production Management
- Prerequisites: RTF 338 or RTF 366.
Comprehensive consideration of the production process from the
standpoint of fiscal and creative management; preproduction and
production planning using computer budgeting and scheduling; packaging,
financing, and marketing issues in feature filmmaking.
- RTF 367L - Film II: Sync-Sound Production
- Prerequisites: RTF 366. Concurrent enrollment in RTF 367K required.
Theory and techniques in color 16-mm synchronous sound production;
individual and collective production assignments, with emphasis on
technical proficiency, examination of the entire production process,
visualization of ideas, and critical evaluation of the visual text.
Includes group projects in which the student will specialize in a
particular aspect of the production process while experiencing the fine
art of collaboration.
- RTF 368 - (Topic 1) Film III: Film & Electronic
- Editing Prerequisites: RTF 367K and 367L
Presents advanced techniques of film and videotape editing, and trains
students in their use through a series of film and video editing
exercises.
- RTF 368 - (Topic 2) Film III: Production Crafts
- RTF 368 - (Topic 3) Film III: Film-TV Production
- Prerequisites: RTF 367K and 367L
Provides students with the opportunity to apply, reinforce, and expand
upon knowledge and skills already acquired in the film production
sequence. Opportunity to collectively plan and produce a complete
film.
- RTF 368 - (Topic 4) Film III: Directing

- RTF 331L - Corporate and Instructional Video
- Prerequisites: RTF 338
Investigation of the many formats and uses of corporate/ instructional/
organizational video. Emphasis is placed on working with clients, with
the student as a "communication consultant," and in producer-director
production teams.
- RTF 338 - TV Production I
- This course is designed to help students learn the process of
television studio production while becoming familiar with typical
program formats, theories of narrativity, as well as production
personnel and procedures. By providing hands-on experience, technical
know-how and a multicultural awareness of media, this course introduces
the process, language and techniques of live-on-tape, multiple camera
television studio production.
- RTF 340 - TV Production II: Editing
- Prerequisites: RTF 338.
This course introduces the techniques and aesthetics of off-line
videotape editing of picture and sound, including preparation for
making the edit master. Lectures are augmented with series of editing
exercises.
- RTF 340 - (Topic 1) TV II: Drama/Music
- Prerequisites: RTF 338.
The intermediate level of multi-camera studio television production for
students concentrating their experience in the "creative" or
interpretive aspects of programming. Emphasis is on improving artistic
skills and developing dependable production techniques for realizing
dramatic and music programs.
- RTF 340 - (Topic 2) TV II: Public Affairs Production
- Prerequisites: RTF 338
The goal of this course is to allow students to probe deeper into the
creative and technical aspects of television production, with an
emphasis on public affairs and video journalism. Students will be
involved in newscast production and field production of documentary
style public affairs television.
- RTF 340 - (Topic 3) TV II: Editing
- Prerequisites: RTF 338
This course introduces the techniques and aesthetics of off-line
videotape editing of picture and sound, including preparation for

- RTF 340 - (Topic 4) TV II: Stagecraft and Lighting
- Prerequisites: RTF 338.
- RTF 343 - Advanced Television Production and Performance
- Prerequisite: RTF 340.
Specialized problems in single-camera dramatic and nondramatic video
for producer, director and performer; professional-level production.
- RTF 344 - Special Applications of Media Production
- Special probems involved in audio, film and video production.
- RTF 366K - Television Field Production: News Gathering
- This course is designed as a practical approach to television news
production, focusing on the production aspects of television news & all
the elements necessary to get the news łon-the-air˛ in a professional
manner.
- RTF 366K - TV Field Production: Documentary/Ethnographic
- Prerequisites: RTF 305, 317 and 318, and 1 additional lower division
RTF course.
This course focusses on the concepts, theories and production of
documentary and ethnographic video products.
AUDIO

- RTF 337 - Radio Production
- This is a lecture-discussion-demonstration-participation course
designed to acquaint students with the basic principles of radio
production techniques, and give students an understanding of radio
station practices and procedures.
- RTF 341 - Audio Production
- Prerequisites: RTF 337.
Theory and practice of stereo and multitrack audio recording for
applications in radio, television, and film. This course is devoted to
the study of acoustics, audio electronics and technology, and audio
production.
- RTF 341C - Advanced Audio for Broadcast and Film
- Prerequisites: RTF 341.
The purpose of this class is to establish a forum where the
meta-language of sound for film and video will be studied and
discussed, and to apply sound aes-thetics and technology to post
production sound sweetening for video and film.
