RTF 331T - Project #2

Connecting the Meaning

**You will create a stand alone audio piece that conveys the meaning of a topic, theme, or theory presented in Douglas Kahn’s book.  Use topics from chapters 1-5 only.

Examples here are John Cage’s “Williams Mix”, Pierre Schaeffer’s “Music Concrete”, Synethesia, Imitation, Significant Noises, Simultaneity, etc…

Part One:  Due in Class Tuesday Feb 26nd at 10am.

1) Proposal

You will submit a two-page description of your project.

1)    You MUST explain your own understanding of the topic from Kahn’s book that you will be demonstrating.  You may create a new theory or understanding of sound/noise if you wish.  But this new theoretical construct should be grounded in a concept from Kahn’s book.

2)    In this proposal you should include your idea for the finished project as well as 5 sounds that you intend to use (this can be just a description of the sounds).  Granted I expect you to have more than five sounds, this is meant to get you thinking and to give me an idea of your direction

Part Two: Due in Class Thursday March 21st at 10am

1) Sound Piece in .wav format to play for class

2) Sound Project in MP3 format for website

3) Description of project on website

Remember that this project is a stand-alone-audio piece.

Your Project should be between 3 to 4 minutes in length.  (Points will be taken off it is outside of that length)  You have much freedom here with your finished product. Your peers and myself will be critiquing you based on the quality of your finished project and the level at which your project represents the topic you are attempting to convey or address.  We will be listening to and critiquing your work in class.

If you have any questions, please see Carrie or me.
