Howdy Cliff,

Didn't know you were back! Sorry you missed me at Kiona, I wanted to go - it just didn't work out for me. I appreciate hearing about what you learned, it would be nice to hear more. Sounds like thermalling for altitude at Kiona was quite a letdown.

What Craig and I are debating is the idea of a fairly unstructured week (or month). I like his idea of using radar to measure ultimate speed in a dive and DS passes as well. I don't care personally about protection, if I am holding the radar I'll just hide behind the flier! Here is a link to a radar site with a few nice guns. I think all of them can be rented.

I still don't know when and where this can happen. You have to get the gun and fliers to the agreed upon site - with wind. Would someone with supernatural powers (Scott????) please look into a crystal ball and suggest a site and date. We may even decide to wait another year. Brad said he would look into a gun to rent, we already researched this before and have a lead on a great gun (see the Stalker Pro at the above site) - and we could spread the rent cost around - maybe 5 guys is all we need. Craig says he used a gun before ( like a carnival speedball gun) and it worked fine. Craig - Do you still have that gun? Do you think we should buy or rent a better one?

rotting in armchair hell,
Tom

Ok, which one of you wants to step up to the plate and put all the energy into organizing this thing? It just don't happen by itself. I only saw two of you besides myself up in Washington to see the first one (Speed trials)ever to take place. Real interested aren't we? Arm chair quarterbacking? Safe enough to do. What,...you think you're going to hold a speed trials in your own back yard and get some kind of world recognition? Realistically, we don't have the site. It may not exist in California. Come on guys, where were you when we needed you? We could used you and your talents up at Eagle/Kiona this year. Even if we didn't give a good showing we all could have learned a lot. You could have given your input there and it would have been listened to. Everyone wants the wheel to be re-invented but when it comes down to it they want someone else to do it. "Everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die". If I go to another one with intentions of competing I'm going to use the Boy Scouts motto and "Be prepared".
When a event such as the Speed trials takes place it isn't just the slope rockets that may win. I learned that the hard way. If you stage a event like this, unless you have some real inside with the "All Mighty" you better have more than one arrow in your quiver. You will never get the perfect plane built for the perfect conditions. You may get lucky but that's where it starts and ends. Now if your smart, you'll have two or three planes designed for differing conditions and then if your good enough, establish a great technique for running the course then maybe you'll win.
As far as changing the course and doing away with the FAI, I'm all for it. But you still have to be prepared.
      Cliff.
