Melissa's Fantabulous Pomogoth Page

This was my first ACTlab experience. I found the structure of the class quite refreshing. The class helped me expand my creativity and I am very happy with the results. Enjoy the projects!
I was inspired to do this video based on observations of my classmates during class. I found it interesting how fast intelligent philosophical conversation turned into vehement defenses of a person's own opinion. When I saw how angry the discussions made some of my classmates, I thought to myself: "Is anything they're discussing actually going to change their lives? Will anyone eat chicken for dinner instead of spaghetti if someone convinces them that man is divine and not just an animal?"
The Monster Within All of Us
I did this drawing while in the throes of the semester. If I had had more time, I would've turned it into an animation. I wanted to visualize the idea of the "monstrous" within all humans. The monster grows out of nothing within the person rather than being implanted with it by an outside force. This follows the more viral view of monstrosity within people. The monster ends up devouring the persons entire being, but still uses the person's skin to disguise himself. No one in the person's life realizes that he is no longer the man he used to be, but a monster in man's skin.
Hurricane Charley's Lasting Effects
This last video was particularly important to me personally. It brings light to the current plight of several people left homeless by Hurricane Charley. The content of the video follows the gothic definition of the "monster": someone not considered of the majority who is chased off or hidden away from public view. The video's style itself is more postmodern in the fact that I had no actual video footage of the trailer park in Florida and very few pictures. Most of the information revealed in the video is from a recent Rolling Stone article that was the only comprehensive article written about the situation at the time.
