about the video.

An experiment in controlled randomness. The video is composed of high resolution experimental shots taken with my trusty PowerShot G1. Using expressions in After Effects, each image moves around on a 3x3 grid in front of the "camera". Speed, direction, and opacity of the layers are randomly generated.

There are generally 3-4 layers seen at any one time during the piece. While the sequence of images was chosen by me (so that the piece actually progresses over time), the actual part of the image you see, for how long, and how bright is determined by the cosmos (or at least After Effects' randomize_seed() function). Also, different images had varying degrees of complexity, and thus when overlapped the overall image was sometimes just too busy. For each layer I had to experiment with an acceptable range of values so one layer did not 'overwhelm' the rest. Therefore, I imposed a number of constraints on this randomness and can take credit for some of the results. : )

revision 2: Per Sandy's suggestion, I nudged each layer so that it appeared at a time when its opacity was naturally low, eliminating what appeared to be straight cuts in the piece and giving it an overall 'smoother' feel. I like it!

about the music.

You heard an edit of "Winter Delerium" off of Among Others by Proem.   His latest album, Socially Inept is superb.   I could tell you more, but you are better off listening to Proem (and other great artists) at the following links...
