Tarik has always lived guided by computers and robots. They were there when his parents were
out working or off travelling. They are always there to take care of him. He cannot imagine it
being any other way. He has never dressed, cleaned, cooked, or performed any other daily life
task without the help of a computer or robot, and has hardly ever seen another person perform
these daily routines independently either. Poke Tarik to wake him. But watch out. He's slow to
get going.
Closet
A closet used to be a small storage space for clothes. Nowadays these spaces have become fully
automated systems that not only store the clothes with robotic arms and storage spaces; they
also detect odors to do laundry when necessary; pull out a selection of clothes chosen by the
person using them from an interactive audio and visual interface; and finally, aided by the
central domestic system agent, constantly seeks out additions to Tarik's wardrobe from clothing
suppliers guided be his preferences that he has set over time and occasionally alters.
Kitchen
There are no longer separate rooms in which humans store and cook meals. Humans no longer cook,
or maintain their own supply of groceries. With a mechanized system including stoves, an oven, a
microwave, and cold and room temperature storage spaces the kitchen system provides food items
requested, from snack to dinner, through an opening no larger than an oven door. Its interface is
mostly audio controlled, although a screen can be utilized to view meals, nutritional values, or
other information regarding the cuisine. The dining surface unfolds when Tarik sits down to eat.
Ceiling
People have always looked up to the skies and out to the universe for answers to the mysteries of
life. This is why it's no surprise that the ceiling has been transformed from what used to be a lid
on top of the four standing walls to the largest visual interface in humans' homes. The ceiling can
turn from an opaque surface, to a window to the stars, to a light source, to a screen for a variety
of informational applications. Lying on his back, either getting ready to go to sleep, start his
day, or even just resting, Tarik enjoys checking up on his horoscope, learning of current events,
or different forms of entertainment.
Entertainment
Any form of communication, be it entertainment or any other information, is now channeled through
the domestic main processing unit. Although much of this can be communicated to Tarik no matter
where he is in the house, there is still good reason for a space set aside for entertainment.
Whenever he is not working or interacting with different systems Tarik can sit down to either
play games, tour virtual environments, or like humans used to do in caves and around fires just
sit back and watch and listen to a good story.
